The Boundary Road level crossing in Coopers Plains will finally receive an overpass to ease congestion and improve the safety of the site.

In addition to the $40 million pledged by Council and $73 million from the Federal Government, the State Government has committed $66 million in funds for the infrastructure project.

A business case is due for completion by mid-2021 to determine the final costing for the project.

“This is a fantastic win for the community and one that I have been actively campaigning for over many years alongside residents and the Coopers Plains Overpass Action Group,” Moorooka Councillor Steve Griffiths said.

Mr Griffiths had previously reported on the 20-25 minutes delay faced by commuters at the crossing.

At the beginning of this year, RACQ Head of Public Policy Rebecca Michael said level crossings were real choke points across the city.

“RACQ members frequently tell us level crossings are a source of frustration and delay,” Dr Michael said.

“As Brisbane continues to grow, we’re going to see more train services and traffic. Road improvements around level crossings will go some way to easing congestion; however, a long-term program of level crossing removal is required to future proof our network.”

RACQ’s priority locations for level crossing removal has Boundary Road, Coopers Plains as number one.

“Removing level crossings would improve safety, congestion and rail service frequencies across south-east Queensland, benefiting commuters as well as motorists.”
