The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has opened 75 positions for Census Engagement Managers for the 2021 data-collect.

Interested professionals are expected to demonstrate a high level of engagement, communication skills and experience working with diverse populations.

ABS has also announced that it will employ field staff with either lived experience of being homeless or proven expertise in supporting people experiencing homelessness. Within the positions available, 35 are destined to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants.

“Census Engagement Managers contribute hugely to their community and Australia,” Andrew Henderson, Census Executive Director and National Spokesperson, said.

“Census data is used to inform important decisions including transport, schools, healthcare, housing, infrastructure and business. It also helps plan support and services for individuals, families and communities.

“The data helps us meet the needs of our diverse population groups, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and people experiencing homelessness,” Mr Henderson said.

Census data is a primary source for information on homelessness. Combined with local knowledge, it informs initiatives for housing solutions which provide safe, long-term accommodation for rough sleepers.
